Artist : Redman
Real Name : Reggie Noble
Born :
April 23, 1970
Hometown : Newark, New Jersey

Redman Biography :

Redman is one of the few emcees in the industry who has the talent to rap effortlessly as if it’s second nature. He got his name from when a little girl threw a snowball at his face when he was a kid and his cheeks swelled up. Hailing from Newark, New jersey (home to the likes of Queen Latifah and Naughty By Nature) Redman went to Montclair state college where he also sold crack and weed just to get by while he struggled to build a career as an emcee. After 6 years of freestyles and mixtapes Redman (real name : Reggie Noble) got his break with EPMD after rooming with Erick Sermon for 2 years. After this hook up Redman appeared on the EPMD classic ‘Hardcore’ from the 1991 album ‘Business as usual’.

He was quickly signed up to Rush Associated Labels /Def Jam and also became part of the Hit Squad which consisted of Das EFX, EPMD and K-Solo. His debut single, ‘Blow your mind’ was released in late ’92, the track sampled the Gap bands ‘Outstanding’ and introduced the world to Reggie Nobles Spaced out brand of funk and his unique nasal flow while he rapped about nothing but love for the weed.

Also in late 1992 the album ‘Whut ? Thee album’ was released, like its preceding single the set was 20 tracks long dripping in that deep muddy funk that was becoming Redman’s trademark sound. Produced primarily by Erick Sermon, Reggie also contributed with some co production that displayed yet again his spaced out style, the album played like a movie. The album spawned another 2 singles ‘Time 4 sum Aksion’ and ‘Tonight’s the night’ that used the hook from the Mary Jane Girls 70’s hit ‘All night long’ which he also sampled on ‘Can’t wait from his second album, Dare iz a Darkside.

After a two-year hiatus Redman appeared from out of nowhere, he had experienced the break up of EPMD, which affected the success of his debut album even though it was deemed a classic. He had left the Hit Squad and was now a part of The Def Squad that also consisted of Erick Sermon, Keith Murray and Jamal (from the group Illegal). After brief show stealing appearances on Erick Sermons first solo set ‘No pressure’ Redman had gone underground, so underground he was now dealing with the underworld. ‘Dare iz a Darkside’ was released in November 1994, the cover depicted Redman buried in the sand with only his head showing, the music was dark and sparse, he was handling a lot more of the production and his flow was improving to what it is today. Again the album produced a couple of singles but the attention was drawn mainly to the retarded feel of ‘Rockafella’, the first release from the album.

In November 1996, Redman returned once again with his third album ‘Muddy Waters’, this was a return to the original sound he had displayed on his debut album but with a combination of what he had developed on ‘Dare iz a Darkside’. Again the album produced some show stopping highlights ‘Sooperman luva III’ (the 3rd part to the on going tales of Sooperman luva, each part having a twist) ‘Do what ya feel’ with Method Man produced by the Fugees’ Pras and ‘Case Closed’. The first single reunited Reggie with his old Hit Squad member K-solo, ‘Its like that (My big Brother)’ proved how far he had come and so did ‘Whateva man’ and ‘Pick it up’.

Between albums Redman has made various cameo appearances with East and West Coast rappers as well as R’N B artists. Highlights have included Cypress Hill’s ‘Throw Ya Hands In The Air (Remix)’, with Method man on the track ‘How High’, 2Pac and the Dogg Pound ‘Got my mind made up’ where he again teamed up with Method Man, LL Cool J’s now infamous track ‘4,3,2,1’, D’Angelos- ’Me and Those Dreamin Eyes (Remix)’ and the UK’s very own Beverley Knight on ‘Made It Back’. With the reunion of EPMD completing things Redman is now part of ‘The Squadron’ which consists of Keith Murray, Das EFX, newcomer Nocturnal and EPMD but he has still released a Def Squad album with Keith Murray and Erick Sermon in the summer of 1998, entitled ‘El Nino’ has been welcomed successfully after the release of ‘Rappers delight’ in 1997. Redman AKA ‘The Funk Docta Spock’ dropped his 4th solo LP ’Docs Da Name 2000’ on December 8th of 1998.
