Pharoahe Monch released one of the most creative, ambitious and finest albums in Hip-Hop history six years ago (1999) on now defunctional Rawkus Records. Whats significant about Pharoahe’s style is that he packs in punchlines then recites them at a quick pace. In fact, it would be impossible for the listener to grasp all of the punchlines through just one listen of the album. Stand-out tracks include "Rape" ; one of the most creative songs I have ever heard, in which Pharoahe talks about rapin’ the track over (other MC’s ain’t fu*kin’ it right !) Another stand-out is "Official", another creative track where Pharoahe implements a barrage of sports references within the song.

On the next two tracks, "Official" and "No Mercy", Pharoahe enlists the musical talent of Canibus and M.O.P. to pummel the two tracks into submission. Soon comes "The Light", an actual, non-lame Hip-Hop love song where Pharoahe takes the listener to a journey through paradise. Some people think the album doesn’t deserve classic status because of the tracks/track order ; for example : "The Next $hit", or how "The Ass" leads into "The Light", however I disagree. Also, loyal followers of Pharoahe may not be pleased, since Pharoahe had lost weight from his Organized Konfusion days, so his voice is not as "commanding". I wonder why this album went out of print so quick ; and why Pharoahe still hasn’t found a label to call home, though he is recording material (check out "Fish Fillet", produced by Sa-Ra).
