Young
Jeezy
Real name: Jay L. Jenkins
Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia
Young Jeezy is signed to Def Jam as a solo artist and formerly Bad Boy Records as a member of the hip-hop quartet Boyz N Da Hood. One of his nicknames is "Snowman" because of his past as a drug dealer; "snow" is a slang term for cocaine.
His group’s self-titled
debut album, Boyz N Da Hood, was released on June 21, 2005 and peaked at #5
on the Billboard 200 albums chart. His debut solo album, Let’s Get it: Thug
Motivation 101, was released on July 26, 2005 and debuted at #2 selling 172,000
copies in its first week.
Young Jeezy has been featured in several popular 2005 hip-hop songs such as his own "And Then What" featuring Mannie Fresh and "Soul Survivor" featuring Akon, Gucci Mane’s "So Icy", and Boyz N Da Hood’s "Dem Boyz." In 2005, Young Jeezy also recorded a remix of "Go Crazy" with rappers Jay-Z and Fat Joe. The song is creating a buzz throughout the entire country, skyrocketing Young Jeezy’s hip-hop status. Jeezy is currently planning to record a mixtape with Harlem rapper Juelz Santana.
Part rapper, part
philanthropist, Young Jeezy is a positive force in today’s hip-hop community.
The self-proclaimed Snowman has warmed up in response to Hurricane Katrina,
implementing a new relief program for the South with the help of T.I, David
Banner, and Atlantic music magazine editor Juice. The recent tragedy has hit
close to home for Jeezy, a proud resident of Atlanta, and he has called on local
residents to gather the donations and support that the victims in Mississippi,
Louisiana, and Alabama so urgently need.
The emergent artist has also been generous enough to open up his estate to fourteen refugees, offering food and shelter until they find the means to get back on their feet. Jeezy just completed what may be his highest-profile guest appearance to date, rapping with Jay-Z on the remix of Mariah Carey’s "Shake It Off".
