U-God Sues Wu Music Group For $170,000 In Unpaid Royalties
Trouble continues to brew within the Wu-Tang camp as group member U-God has filed a lawsuit against Wu Music Group claiming he is owed more than $170,000 in unpaid royalties.
In the lawsuit filed with the United States District Court of the Southern District of New York on Tuesday (January 8), the rapper, real name Lamont Hawkins, is claiming he has not received advances due from the latest Wu-Tang Clan album "8 Diagrams" since signing a deal in May 2007.
Hawkins is also suing Wu Music for $50,000 from his involvement in the group’s Rock The Bells tour appearances, $60,000 from the publishing deal with BMG, the $40,000 advance from the "8 Diagrams" album and his share of proceeds from sales of Wu-Tang related merchandise.
"Defendant has failed and/or refused to pay certain monies currently due and owing to plaintiff, despite plaintiff’s repeated demands that it do so," the lawsuit reads.
The lawsuit also accuses Wu Music Group of breaching its contract with Hawkins wilfully and intentionally, "without justification."
On top of the $170,000 U-God is seeking 9% interest on the sum as well as attorney fees.
"8 Diagrams,"
the long awaited Wu-Tang comeback album, debuted at No. 26 on the Billboard
200 chart this week selling around 68,000 copies in the United States.
