Tony Yayo’s Assault Charges Dropped

All charges against G-Unit rapper Tony Yayo over an alleged assault on the teenage son of a music rival were dismissed today (February 14).

Yayo was accused of slapping the 14-year-old son of music executive Jimmy "Henchmen" Rosemond, manager of former G-Unit rapper The Game, in March 2007. The rapper and several members of his entourage were claimed to have attacked the boy for wearing a Czar Entertainment T-Shirt as he walked down W. 25th street in New York - a street with offices for both G-Unit’s management company Violator and Rosemond’s Czar Entertainment.

"I am pleased to announce that as of this morning, Tony Yayo is no longer facing any criminal charges relating to the incident that occurred last March," Yayo’s lawyer, Scott Leemon said in a statement. "I would like to thank the District Attorney’s office, who after further investigation, agreed with us that Tony Yayo should not be subject to any criminal liability for this incident.”

The dismissal of the charges comes just two months after Lowell Fletcher, an associate of Yayo and a co-defendant in the case, admitted to slapping the boy claiming Yayo had actually tried to restrain him.

"As I told you from the beginning, Tony Yayo did not hit anyone and would never do anything to harm a child," Leemon continued. "This fact was confirmed by Mr. Fletcher when he told members of the notorious hip-hop police in August that he did this on his own. The hip-hop police buried this helpful information, and the charges against Tony Yayo proceeded until today. Without a doubt, today’s proceedings have validated Mr. Bernard’s claims he was falsely accused. ... All that Tony Yayo admitted to doing was getting out of the car and glaring at the victim. Once he realized what Fletcher was doing, he went and grabbed Fletcher to pull him away from the victim."

Yayo, real name Marvin Bernard, was facing charges of misdemeanor assault, harassment and endangering the welfare of a child, however, they have all been dropped as part of a plea deal to a lesser non-criminal harassment charge, which will see Yayo serving 10 days of community service.

Fletcher pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child and has been sentenced to nine months in prison. He will serve the sentence immediately after his current stretch on narcotics charges.

Leemon said Bernard accepted the plea deal to avoid "unnecessary hardships" of a trial.
