The State of the Dirty South Rap Scene

UGK, Outkast, 8Ball & MJG, No Limit, the Cash Money Millionaires (when they were the real number 1 stunnas). The dirty south used to be jumping with classic rap music. We used to have our own style and our own swag. The major rap companies weren’t messing with us, cause they were afraid to put out rappers who had crazy Deep South accents and glorified Cadillacs. They were afraid to hear us on the radio talking about money, cars, hoes and bling-bling, but somehow we made it through that and showed the rap world what we had to offer. We gave the game a king, who ain’t neva scared to claim his crown in T.I.

We gave the game three of raps greatest duos in UGK, 8Ball & MJG, and Outkast and no offense to Too $hort and Ice-T, but we even gave the game the greatest pimp to ever touch the microphone in Pimp C. We used to do our thing in this game, but now I’m not so sure that we representing like we should. Sure we got some of the hottest rappers in the game right now with Lil Wayne, T.I., Ludacris, and Young Jeezy, but all I keep hearing on every radio station is "ringtone rap". Everybody’s trying to be the next Soulja Boy, DJ Unk, Dem Franchize Boyz, and D4L.

It’s crazy cause almost every song that comes out is a dance song with a catchy hook and now that’s what we’re being known for. Even though the South has always been known for it’s bass thumping, club music, this new wave is totally different from how it used to be. Its like everybody’s trying to be the next Soulja Boy. Sure Soulja Boy sold 10 million ringtones, but everybody ain’t gone be able to do that.

Artists are now limiting themselves to making catchy, ringtone friendly songs for myspace hits, instead of sticking to making the quality music that the south used to produce. The Dirty South is all messed up right now, but the swag is definitely still there. As the game goes into the 4th quarter with us down by 10 against the best them in the league. We gotta find a way to hustle and comeback, cause we ain’t got that many more times to turnover the ball before we dig our own grave.

Its time to see who gone step up and who not, cause like Barack Obama, said "It’s Time For A Change".
