--- Beatnuts Biography :
The Beatnuts originally came together in 1989 in Queens, New York. 3 members, Psycho Les(Lester Fernandez), Ju-Ju(Jerry Tineo), and Fashion(Berntony Smalls). In the early 1990’s the trio did remixes for Cypress Hill, and Naughty By Nature among many others. Thier original goal was to just make beats. This earned them a contract to call their own with Combat Redords. Their first album came out in 1993 and was entitled, "Intoxicated Demons". This was a short LP containing 10 tracks. Fashion was jailed for 6 months soon after the albums release for drug charges, and after his release left the Beatnuts.
His departure was not hostile, he released the disappointing LP ‘God connections’
under his new name of Al Tariq. In 1997 JuJu and Psycho Les re-appeared without
Fashion with the incredible ‘Stone Crazy’ album which spawned the
tracks ‘Do you believe’ and ‘Off tha books’ with its
cartoon like loop plus guests Big Pun and Cuban link from Fat Joe’s Terror Squad.
Other highlights included ‘Here’s a drink’ and ‘Find
That’.
With fashion gone, the Beatnuts still held their own but you couldn’t
help feel something was missing. This was proved in 1998 with the release of
‘The Spot’ EP, with 7 remixes (unfortunately the brilliant ‘Hellraiser’
remix wasn’t included) and 1 unreleased track (Treat$ featuring
A.L. and the Rawcotiks), some of the songs still contained Fashions vocals,
an element that was missing on the last album.
With the group still consisting of JuJu and Psycho Les they have still worked
with Al Tariq/Kool Fash since his departure, most notably on both DJ Honda albums.
They have proved the magic they create on both albums strongest cuts ‘Out
for the cash’ (Featuring Fat Joe and Problemz) and ‘On the mic’
(featuring Cuban link, Problemz and A.L.). They have also contributed production
to albums from Kurious (’A constipated Monkey’) Big Punisher, Mad Skillz (‘The
nod factor’) and Fat Joe (‘Represent’). Maybe one day they’ll
make another album together.
The Beatnuts are currently preparing the release of yet another LP entitled
’Musical Massacre’ which will feature the debut single ’Watch Out Now’/’Turn
It Out.’
