Spike Lee Airs out 50 Cent
50 Cent might have though the negative criticism about his "Get Rich or Die Tryin’" movie, which widely received mediocre reviews and came under fire for glorifying violence, may have stopped this long after its release, but the rapper has come under fire from yet another source. This time it is "Malcolm X" director Spike Lee.
"50 Cent has made a lot of money, but whatever you are doing that makes you have to put a bullet-proof vest on your 5-year-old son, that’s time for some deep introspective s—," says Lee. Lee is no stranger to openly mocking modern hip-hop stars, but took particular offence at 50 Cent’s movie.
"For me, that’s criminal," Lee tells Complex magazine. "Because young brothers, they took that to heart. [They’re like], ’Whatever I got to do to get them rims, get my fly gear, to get my bitches and hos, I am going to do it. [Bleep] who I got to hurt, who I got to shoot, who I got to kill.’ That’s crazy to me."
Lee also strongly disagrees with 50’s defensive claims that his movie doesn’t encourage violence. "If it’s just a movie, would people be shooting in the theatres the opening weekend?" asks Lee.
Despite the success
of black artists turned movie stars Will Smith and Jamie Foxx, Lee says blacks
still don’t have a place among Hollywood’s executives. "You go to any studio,
the [only] black guy you are going to see is the guy at the gate," says
Lee. "In Hollywood, there is not one African-American who is an executive
… [who] could green light a picture."
