Review :
Sean Paul went from basically being a no-name to probably becoming the most
popular reggae star in America since Bob Marley with this album. And that probably
happened for a good reason, because this album is fire. I’m not a huge dancehall
fan, I’ve always liked roots reggae a lot better, but "Dutty Rock"
is a great case for dancehall. This single album had top ten hits an entire
year apart from each other. The beats are really good, there are some great
club tracks, and his flow is very entertaining. He really sounds like a regular
rap star with a cool accent. Even though you’re not sure what he’s saying most
of the time, you love it anyway.
This edition of "Dutty Rock" has a lot of really good songs. The first single put him on the map in the USA, "Just Give Me The Light". It was great, because it showed us exactly his formula : a catchy hook, crazy lyrics and flow, and super production. It’s easily one of the best songs on the album. "Get Busy" was the biggest hit, probably because of the lyrics, it was a real hot club track. It has a crazy beat just like most of the album and it’s fun to listen to. My favorite song on here is "Like Glue". The beat was my favorite from the album, and even though he still sings as fast as ever, his lyrics are toned down a bit, he’s more laidback in his words. "I’m Still In Love" was a love duet, not his best, but the reggae guitar beat in the back is nice. This CD also included his duet with Beyonce that everybody knows, "Baby Boy", a great song as well.
This CD was a great find that really helped put dancehall back onto the American mainstream map. This and Elephant Man’s "Good 2 Go" set the tone for the dancehall that immediately flooded our airwaves. It’s cool because Sean Paul appeals to guys who like hip hop and reggae and to ladies too. I recommend this to most anybody and hope that "The Trinity" will be as good as this, which seems promising already.
