Rihanna "Umbrella" song controversy

Looks like there’s controversy brewing between underground rapper Illa Ghee and Def Jam’s own Rihanna over the popular track “Umbrella” by Rihanna.

The rapper, more commonly known for his appearances on Mobb Deep’s Hell on Earth LP and Alchemist’s “Hold You Down” single featuring Nina Sky and Prodigy, alleges that his track was written in 2005 and handed off to President of A&R at Rocafella/Def Jam Records, Lenny S. by a friend of the rapper. The track in question was released on Illa Ghee’s mixtape Myrtle and Throop in 2006 and Rihanna’s “Umbrella” was a featured single on her sophmore album ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ in 2007.

The similarities stem from the lyrics where Illa Ghee says, “I, ella, ella, ay” and Rihanna says, “Ella, Ella, Ella, ay”. Because the similarities are only in one line of both tracks, Illa Ghee says has no plans on suing “Umbrella” producer Christopher ‘Tricky’ Stewart or Def Jam Records.

Lenny S. of Rocafella/Def Jam Records simply had a, “No comment.”
