Notorious is a success despite unfortunate violence
The highly anticipated biopic of Hip Hop Icon Notorious B.I.G. had a very successful opening weekend and already grossed $21.5 million.
This is the most successful opening weekend for Fox Searchlight, beating out the company’s previously critically acclaimed projects Juno and Little Miss Sunshine.
"The estimated three-day gross for Notorious showed it was more popular than expected beyond African-American audiences. We crossed over, which speaks volumes about his impact as a cultural icon", explained Chris Aronson, senior vice president at 20th Century Fox to the Associated Press.
A shooting erupted on friday night (January 16) at a screening of Notorious in Greensboro, North Carolina. The 32-year-old underwent surgery after being rushed to Moses Cone Hospital. Police and witnesses who were at the theater at the time of the shooting noted that the movie’s star, Jamal "Gravy" Woolard, was in the Grand 18 at the time of the shooting.
Four people were also stabbed at a New York City nightclub release party for the new film, Notorious, this weekend. The men stabbed at the Brooklyn nightclub were advertising the "official" after-party for the opening of the film Notorious. Police said Saturday a 21-year-old victim stabbed numerous times was in critical condition at Brookdale Hospital. Three others were stable.
