Moka Only Biography :
Early on in his life, Moka Only discovered his love for the manipulation of the English language. Growing up in Victoria, he hit every mic available, rocking house parties and ciphers alongside his partner in rhyme, Prevail. Together they recorded some demo tracks that got out on tape, progressed to hooking up some shows, but continued to focus most of their energy on freestyling as the mainstay in O94. The two moved to San Diego on a whim and hooked up with other underground way-pavers, such as Tony Da Skitzo and Mr. Brady.
In 1995, Moka Only
and Prevail
returned to Vancouver traveled and well-seasoned in the arts of rhyme and reason.
Soon after, they met Mad
Child, another up and coming Vancouver-based MC. While at a Denny’s
in a late night session after a party, the trio formed the Swollen Members crew,
and the beginning of what would become Battleaxe Records. Prior to the crew
really making a name for themselves, being a scorpio and a stubborn sort of
cat, Moka Only decided to go at it alone and pursue his own solo career.
The mid-to-late 90s saw Moka Only independently releasing over a dozen solo full-length tapes, a slab of vinyl, and performing countless shows, all of which contributed to his critical acclaim in underground circles, and made him a well-respected part of the hip hop community. Moka Only first gained widespread worldwide attention through his prominent appearances on "You Can’t Stop The Bumrush", the multi-platinum selling debut Len album, as well as by appearing in 3 of their videos.
After a few years of dirt hustling Moka Only is back with Battleaxe Records and is a bonified soldier. He has now released two slabs of wax on Battleaxe, featuring the lead cuts "Imagine Me" and "Been There". Both singles are receiving a large amount of rotation on radio, and in general making noise worldwide. These singles, along with a video that is receiving strong airplay on television airwaves, have all set the stage for the coming of Lime Green, Moka Only’s debut solo full-length project on Battleaxe Records.
"Lime Green", which hit streets in early April, features guests including Swollen Members, LMNO (Visionaries), Abstract Rude (ATU), and Sunspot Jonz (Mystik Journeymen). The bulk of the production on the album was handled by Moka Only himself, who is proving to be a talented producer as well as an accomplished MC and singer. Moka Only has toured Canada and Australia in support of the release of Lime Green, and is slated to tour the United States this summer with labelmates Swollen Members. Both Moka Only and his "Lime Green" album are out to make a lot of noise this year.
