Tru Life Hosted by J-Love- Tru York

Embarrassing cover ? Check out Jim Jones and Cam’ron in a Borat suit and a dress, respectively. Hilarious skits ? Peep “Max B Phone Call”, “Running Man Skit” and “Hip Hop 101 Game show”. On the latter he even throws a shot at Lil Wayne or as Tru likes to call him, Whoopi Goldberg. This latest mixtape offering from Tru Life is more like homage to The Byrd Gang’s horrible taste in style and the relieving of the Dipset chains. On the robbery inspired “Knives Like” featuring N.O.R.E. he claims that not all the chains he wears actually belong to him. Could that have something to do with the rumors that he was in the studio with Dipset chains on ? On “Gangsta Shit” He threatens to pull a Curtis Jackson and have the big homie Jay push back Juelz’s album.

Although most of the mixtape revolves around the Dipset beef, the kid who states “Dre was taking too long, I brought the Detox” leaves the drama alone long enough to give us a preview of what we can hopefully expect when his album drops. When he puts the drama aside he shines on the tracks and proves to us why he has the ROC chain around his neck. On “I Hate Rap” Tru has a conversation with himself “I don’t care if you a Gangsta and u G’d up/ just know them goddamn albums are raising somebody’s seed up” He quickly answers with “You ain’t stuck in a cell cuz u were raised by rap/ homie u stuck in a cell cuz u were born in the trap …… Look at the facts/before rap, the jails were packed with Latins and Blacks”. “Family Portrait” is another standout track where he reflects on his childhood.

As entertaining as it was, let’s hope that on the next go ‘round Mr. New New York doesn’t get sidetracked and remembers his Tru mission : To bring NY back.

P-Cutta- Street Wars 17 : The Mixtape Game Is Dead

First Hip-Hop is dead and now the mixtape game, well at least according to P-Cutta. In this 17th installment of the Street Wars Series, Dipset is beefing wit the R-O-C, Uncle Murda and Gravy are going at each other, Papoose puts the police in check on “Change Gon’ Come” and Skillz sums up the year by going at everyone. Just when I thought it was over, everybody’s favorite rapper, 50 cent, resurrects his old style and some old beefs on “Rob Me Blind” where he even takes a couple of shots at Oprah. I hear she’s working on an answer track. And do I hear comeback ? Ja Rule comes hard on “21 Gunz” by (surprise, surprise) going at said favorite rapper. Let’s hope there’s at least somebody left to bring hip-hop back.

Big Mike- What’s beef 2007

What’s beef ? When Cam sends his soldiers to put his work in for him. The result : A bunch of forgettable dis tracks by 2nd string rappers. It’s a good thing that the Lox never seem to let us down when bringing that raw shit, check out “Louch Walk On By” and “Smile” and the M-O-B-B on “Leave It Alone”. There is no problem with putting the Dipset on 8 songs but not even half of them are worth listening to. I’m actually mad I wasted my time pressing the play button. I don’t know what Cam and Hell Rell were thinking on “I’m The Shit”, its actually pretty funny cuz that’s exactly what the song sounds like. Ouch !

DJ Envy + TapeMasters Inc- Purple Codeine 9.14

Ludacris said "Hip Hop isn’t dead it’s in the South" and DJ Envy shows us exactly why on Purple Codeine version 9.14 (don’t ask). Chamillionaire holds it up on "Riding Over Seas" featuring Akon, "Hold Up" with D-Rich and breaks down exactly why Hip Hop is in the state that it is in on "Hip Hop Warning” where he blames the downfall of Hip hop on corporate America, Myspace and the rappers themselves. The Mixtape Messiah threatens that "If hip hop should die before I’m great/ I’m gonna do more than murder a mixtape". One listen at "Make It Rain" (Remix) and I ask myself : Is fat Joe still from the BX ? Seems like ever since Hip hop went down South, so did he. Oh well. On the rock guitar inspired "Rock Star" Young Jeezy shows us he’s not even trying anymore with bland lines like-"hit the club and spend thousands there/ catch me posted in the back with the Thousandaires". On the R&B side Natasha sounds sick (and not in a good way) on "so sick" featuring The Clipse. I couldn’t even leave it on long enough to hear Pusha’s verse. Good thing Mya rescues us on "Lock You Down" with Lil Wayne. Don’t see why she would have a problem locking anyone down but it sure makes for a damn good song.
