Madchild Banned From America
Madchild Banned From America 02/15/2011
BANNED FROM AMERICA, the new EP from Canadian emcee MADCHILD serves as a sampler of things to come from both the artist himself, and his primary gig with SWOLLEN MEMBERS. Containing five solo cuts and two from Swollen Members’ forthcoming DAGGER MOUTH (out March 15), ’BANNED is a subdued affair presented with a straight-forward, low-key flair, with pop-culture references aplenty.
Dropping nods to SONS OF ANARCHY, late FANTASTIC FOUR member THE HUMAN TORCH, STAR WARS bounty hunter BOBA FETT, and MAD MAX, the self-proclaimed "Canadian Werewolf" flows against a laid-back groove, effortlessly spitting rhymes inspired by his recent denial of entry into the United States.
On "Fresh Air," one of the two SWOLLEN MEMBERS tracks in the set, the group glides against a background that samples and reconstructs the theme song from the classic "Generation One" TRANSFORMERS cartoon of the 1980’s. On "Mr. Impossible" (contained on the review copy, but appearing to be omitted from retail copies) the ’MEMBERS drop a hell of a groove while name-dropping TRUE BLOOD and ANA PAQUIN, The SILVER SURFER, The Incredible HULK, and Christopher Nolan’s INCEPTION along with it’s star LEONARD DiCAPRIO.
A solid and enjoyable record for sure, but at only 20 minutes in length, these seven songs feel really short. As a sampler to pump-up interest for the new SWOLLEN MEMBERS and the MADCHILD full-length? Consider it a mission accomplished.
