Review:
Marking his 13th solo effort and his first release with Antagonist Records,
Krs-One’s Life is a welcomed lesson from the Teacher. His Edutainment
on Life maintains the political activism, industry criticism, and cultural conservation
that have been a staple of his music for over two decades. Lyrics such as “Everyone
is a biter now, no innovation” (“The Way We Live”), “Whatever
happened to samples and loops” (Still Slippin’), and “I do
a lot of work just not in the mainstream” (“My Life”) reveal
an earnest dislike for the state of the culture while emphasizing the true school
is still embraced but just on the underground. He establishes the model others
should follow but not copy. The Blastmaster puts it best on “Life”
when he rips “I am Hip-Hop, I don’t speak for Blacks” (“Still
Slippin”).
Looking to provide Hip-Hop preservation and not a sole spokesman for the black community, the Teacher is joined on this effort by label mates the Footsoliders. The name of their group is fitting since they follow in the very footsteps of the legend. Their diversity, passion, and dedication make this pairing a hopeful union for the future of Hip-Hop. From the evils of materialism “Bling Blung” to the instant autobio classic “My Life”, Krs provides a much needed effort that is truly worthy of his legendary status.
