Jay-Z 2008 : Digital-only record label?
The rumor has been floating around for a few months now, but the Boy Genius Report is bringing some fresh information, supposedly from a high-up person attached to Jay-Z.
No one can confirm a new Jay-Z Record Label for now, but it would make make sense for a lot of people.
Indeed, Jay-Z left his CEO position at Def Jam after his contract expired on Dec. 31 and has made the following statement: "It’s really about trying to invest in the future, trying to invest in maybe coming up with a new model. Because going in hard making records with artists and throwing those records into a system that’s flawed is not exciting for me. It’s not the music ; people ingest music the same way. It’s just that the model of selling CDs has changed. So doing things the typical way is not in the best interests of anyone and not exciting for me. My whole thing is, how do we invest in the future ? If everyone is committed to doing that, then I’m sure there’s a deal to be made."
Steve Jobs cannot create a record label because as Crunchgear explains there would be federal trust issues at play, and more importantly, Apple is banned from ever starting a record label due to previous litigation with the Beatle’s Apple Records.
So the best bet would be that Jay-Z could create his own record label selling digital-only music with an exclusive distribution deal with Apple. This would make sense as we know that Jay-Z is 100% down with Apple business model.
Stay tuned for more information on Jay’s next move.
