Agent & Rawkus Discuss The Peak Oil Phenomenon On New Set 11/27
What is peak oil you ask? Well, Peak Oil is the date when the peak of the world’s petroleum (crude oil) production rate is reached. After this date, the rate of production will by definition enter terminal decline. What does it mean for you and the rest of the world? It means a lot of things. But for the sake of argument let’s just say it means that when Grand Agent drops one or the most important Rap records ever on November 27th, Hip-Hoppers everywhere should take the opening track’s advice and “learn something.”
The phenomenon of Peak Oil is one of those extremely important global problems we never hear about. Unlike global warming or rain forest depletion, the peak oil problem will be a bloodier, dirtier secret when finally revealed by some pseudo-left wingers like Al Gore or Michael Moore. It could leave our wallets empty, our world at a standstill, and more brothers, sisters, sons, and daughters dead in a war being fought to postpone the inevitable.
Some oil-rich countries are now restricting oil sales outside their borders because they are reluctant to share their reserves. According to an industry consulting firm, only 7% of the world’s estimated oil and gas reserves are in countries that allow companies like ExxonMobil free rein. Another 65% are in the hands of state-owned companies such as Saudi Aramco, and the rest are in the hands of Russia and Venezuela, where Western companies can get a foothold one day but lose it the next. The study shows political factors are limiting capacity increases in Mexico, Venezuela, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, and Russia. As a result of not having access to countries amenable to oil exploration, ExxonMobil, for example, isn’t making nearly the investment it should in finding new oil.
“ The ‘Peak Oil’ songs are all about the Peak Oil phenomenon which basically explains why gas and other energy prices are so high right now and whether or not they’re justified. But it’s better explained on the many websites that discuss it. People should just Google ’Peak Oil’ and they’ll see that the album is basically just Rap footnotes to the Peak Oil discussion. The message here is that it’s not too late but it soon could be... maybe? It’s for people to choose a course of action,” says Grand Agent when asked to describe the inspiration behind Peak Oil .
Grand Agent’s seventh full-length release is part and parcel to another relatively new phenomenon. It will be an exclusively digital release as part of Rawkus Records’ RAWKUS 50. The “50” represents a collective of the next “important” Hip-Hop artists according to the founders of the legendary Hip Hop label Rawkus Records. The Rawkus 50 campaign will launch officially on Tuesday, November 27, 2007.
