Gang Starr
Album : Moment of Truth
Release Date : March 31, 1998
Label : Virgin Records
Customer Review :
"Gang Starr has become one of the leading groups in rap due to their updated
Eric B. and Rakim style. One of rap’s greatest producers DJ Premier provides
all production duties, while Guru lays down the vocals. This is an under used
style in rap as albums are often times full of inconsistent production that
does not flow together. This does not occur here as Primo keeps the production
going throughout the album.
The album starts off with "You Know My Steez" a solid song with a
nice Method Man scratch laid into the hook. "Work" is a good song
about what people have to do to make money. "Above The Clouds" features
a nice guest appearance from Inspectah Deck. "Moment of Truth" features
a good beat, with a great string background, as Guru shows off his lyrical skills.
"Make ’em Pay" has one of the albums best beats. "The Mall"
is an odd song as it features G-Dep and is a song dedicated to how each rapper
likes to spend their money when they go shopping.
Of course the production on this album is solid, it’s DJ Premier, and Guru is
an above average emcee and does a pretty good job. The album is very east coast
sounding and the beats use Primo’s raw feel to them. Hip-hop fans in general
who have not heard of Gang Starr might want to listen to some of it beforehand
as it is not intended for mass appeal."
