Foxy Brown Speaks On Hearing Loss

Rapper Foxy Brown made her first public statement since losing her hearing today (December 15) in front of press and photographers. On the set of BET’s "106 & Park," Brown admitted that she hasn’t been able to hear for around six months.

Russell and Kimora Lee Simmons, Doug E. Fresh, Tyson Beckford, Dr. Benjamin Chavis, her doctor, Laura Ares, her new attorney Jospeh Fleming, Reverend Young Blood, Cathy Jordan Sharpton, Burt Bedel, her mother and two brothers were all present to support the 26-year-old female rap star. Jay-Z was scheduled to appear, but didn’t make it to the event.

"In May 2005, my life was altered drastically," Foxy said in a prepared statement. "During my recording of Black Roses, I experienced a sudden hearing loss."

Before breaking down in tears, Brown admitted she couldn’t hear what was going on while she was on stage and relied on communicating through reading lips, facial expressions and notes. "We take for granted the simple words such as ’I love you’, but I appreciate them all." said Brown.

Brown’s doctor and CEO of consulting firm Medicine by Design, Dr. Laura Ares, revealed that Foxy’s condition had no clear source and that she has lost hearing in both ears, which is a permanent condition if left untreated. Foxy is scheduled to undergo treatment in January 2006 and is also set for surgery to try and correct the problem. Dr. Ares says Foxy is the ideal candidate for the procedure and that patients with the same condition have fully regained their hearing. "She will hear again. She is a strong candidate for restoration" the doctor proclaimed.

Russell Simmons also took the stage during the press conference stating that he feels the media portrayed the situation in a wrongful manner and that this press conference was the opportunity to put that right.

Doug E. Fresh also appeared on stage to explain his surprise when he heard of Foxy’s problem. “When I heard it, I didn’t know how true it was, I thought maybe it was a publicity stunt, I was amazed to see that she really couldn’t hear. I was out watching a movie with my son and she was there, he ran up to her, but he came back and said she didn’t talk to him and I thought to myself that isn’t Foxy, she talks to anyone who comes up to her.” The hip-hop veteran also showed how impressed he was that Brown is appearing on the new Notorious B.I.G. album "Duets  : The Final Chapter" despite her hearing loss. “[People had to] tap on her shoulder to keep the beat and record for Biggie’s album and I heard...her flow was bananas,” Doug E. said.

Foxy Brown ended the conference stating she plans to finish recording her long awaited album "Black Roses" as soon as she gets her hearing back, hopefully sometime in 2006.

First and foremost I want to applaud Foxy Brown for coming out about her recent loss. Most celebarities would just keep it in the closet. I feel sorry that this has happend to her. I wish her the best recoperation when she has her surgery done. A lot of people think that certain things can’t and don’t happen to certain people. What people need to realize is that no matter a person’s age, color, sex, creed, religion, or occupation that a person is just that a person and in the end we are al the same.
