Dr. Dre Wins "Up In Smoke" Tour DVD Lawsuit

Dr. Dre has won the invasion of privacy lawsuit filed against him over a videotaped conversation that was featured on his "Up In Smoke" tour DVD.

Judge John A. Murphy dismissed the $3 billion lawsuit filed by three former City of Detroit employees ruling that there was no reason to believe their recorded conversation was private noting that the conversation took place in a room with an open door in which at least one city employee had entered and exited without difficulty.

"Under the circumstances," the judge wrote, "the plaintiffs could not have a reasonable expectation of privacy."

In July 2000, authorities prohibited Dre from broadcasting a video during his "Up In Smoke" tour stops in Detroit and Auburn Hills citing obscenity laws. Dre countered the decision with a $25 million dollar lawsuit against the city of Detroit claiming his First Amendment rights were being violated by banning the video.

Dre was then hit with a $3 billion lawsuit in December 2000 following the release of the tour DVD as Greg Bowens, a spokesman for then-Mayor Dennis Archer, then-police spokeswoman Paula Bridges and then-police Commander Gary Brown claimed their conversation with producers asking them not to show the video, which contained nudity and a gunfight, to the audience at the concert had been illegally recorded during a show at The Joe Louis Arena in July 2000.

The footage was released on the "Up In Smoke Tour" DVD showcasing one of the biggest and most successful Hip-Hop tours of all-time featuring performances from Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Xzibit and Ice Cube.

Glenn Oliver, attorney for the former city officials, said he plans to appeal the decision claiming the cameras were hidden during their conversation.

In related news, Dr. Dre is said to be working on his long-delayed "Detox" album, which is currently scheduled for a June 2008 release.
