Dr. Dre was born in 1965. Hip-hop started around 1970 so Dr. Dre "started hip-hop" at age 5 ? Ridiculous.

Dre can be first heard on a single in 1984. Even Run-DMC dropped their first single in ’83. Let alone other obvious old-school MCs & groups like the Sugarhill Gang (1979), Kurtis Blow (1980) & Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five (1982).

You also forget the fact that Hip-Hop is a complete culture. I’m so sick of G-Unit wannabes calling the latest 50Cent joint "hip-hop". How many tracks really need to be made about the 4 elements before these kids learn ?

The things that Dr. Dre can be credited for are : 1. Popularizing Gangsta rap (w/NWA) 2. Popularizing "G-Funk" (no he wasn’t the first to use that type of sound but he was the first to be successful with it) 3. Launching the careers of many successful artists 4. Putting and Keeping the West Coast on the mainstream map. 5. Being one of if not the greatest Producer in rap music so far.

As for mainstream vs. underground. Great emceeing is great emceeing, period.

Many mainstream cats have reduced themselves to junk and don’t deserve the title MC because they’re too busy trying to please the record execs - Nelly.

Then you’ve got big-time producers who should step away from the mic because they either need ghostwriters - Timbaland, Diddy - or are just plain embarrassing on the mic - Lil John.

Mainstream also has a lot of "play the middle" cats who will drop crap for radio but have some good stuff on their albums - "middle" Jay-Z.

But there are also mainstream cats who don’t back down from their position - Public Enemy, Common.

So you can’t toss all of mainstream and similarly some underground rap is underground because it’s wack. Plain and simple. Any joker can record some lyrics in his basement and say he’s "an underground MC". And everybody knows that doesn’t automatically make it good.
