Common, Kanye, Method Man And Redman Sued Over Sample
Common, Kanye West, Method Man and Redman along with their respective record companies were hit with a lawsuit on Thursday (May 22) filed by the daughter of late jazz musician Joe Farrell accusing all parties of using Farrell’s music without consent.
The lawsuit was filed with the U.S. District Court in New York by Kathleen Firrantello naming the rappers and several labels owned by Universal Music Group.
Firrantello claims that samples of Farrell’s 1974 "Upon This Rock" were used in three separate songs - Common’s "Chi-City," Kanye West’s "Gone" and Method Man and Redman’s "Run 4 Cover" - without permission.
The plaintiff is
seeking $1 million in punitive damages and is requesting that no further copies
of the three tracks be made, sold or performed.
