BET Awards 2007 Winners
The BET Awards 2007 started off smoothly with Jennifer Hudson and Jennifer Holiday opening the show followed by boxing announcer Michael Buffer introducing the host, comedian/actress Mo’Nique who did her rendition of Beyonce with her group of plus sized dancers she calls Phat Girlz (Pretty Hot and Thick).
After Mo’Nique gave props to Beyonce, T.I. performed "Big Thangs Poppin" and won "Hip-Hop Artist of the Year" in which during his acceptance speech he apologized for his recent feud and fist fight on June 24.
"On behalf of my partner T.I.P., I want to apologize for what happened the other day," stated T.I. after punching and scuffling with Ludacris’ manager Chaka Zulu. "They say there’s a fine line between brilliance and insanity. It was very unfortunate and very inappropriate. But I don’t want to divert attention from the positiveness of the BET Awards. That’s what is more important." He also stated that his actions where "un-royal" and that wasn’t how he should have acted.
While T.I. apologized, Ludacris accepted his award for "Best Collaboration" award for "Runaway Love," featuring Mary J. Blige. Ludacris stated in his speech, "This was much more than a song, this was a movement. People say there’s no content in hip hop. This song is proof that there’s content in hip-hop," he added.
Diddy, Keyshia Cole, and Lil Kim performed the song “Last Night” which was followed by Beyonce’s hot robotic performance and then Kelly Rowland and Eve, which ended in a split screen photo pose of both Beyonce and Kelly with a cameo by Beyonce’s sister, Solange and Destiny’s Child member Michelle.
Singer Robin Thicke performed "Lost Without You", which was followed by actor Anthony Anderson and model Lauren London who introduced T-Pain who came on stage dressed like a nerd with two others. T-Pain sung for about a minute and then presented an award.
Patti Labelle, Eddie Levert, Yolanda Adams and Gladys Knight made their way onto the stage to do a tribute to Gerald Levert singing a rendition of "Wind Beneath My Wings," which Gerald Levert often performed. The tribute was followed by Ne-Yo, who won best male R&B artist, who dedicated his award to Levert, who was also nominated in the category.
Sexy model Toccara (America’s Next Top Model contestant) almost lost her clothes while jacking lines from her BET counterpart, Joe Clair, who pulled her straps back up while she read from the teleprompter.
After all the positive speeches and tributes, 50 Cent added the streets to the awards show after some allegedly technical issues with his track. The rapper started off with a"What Tha F!ck" and a few other obscene words throughout his song "Amusement Park". It appeared that when 50 Cent walked passed the legendary Diana Ross, she had a grim look on her face saying in her mind, ’there had to be one person who had to do something ghetto here’.
After 50 Cent’s performance, a tribute was given to of course, Diana Ross. Erkyah Badu, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan performed a number of the her songs in her honor. After their performances, Diana Ross accepted her award for "Lifetime Achievement" presented by her children and stated, "I have tried to keep the standards high...We do not have to say the F-word, we do not have to bump and grind, we don’t have to do some of these things to have longevity in our career." Possibly directed towards 50 Cent.
Like all things, the show had to come to an end. The show ended with an acceptance of the “Viewers Choice Award” which went to Lil Wayne and Birdman for “Stuntin Like My Daddy”.
