Straight to the bank
His album Curtis may been pushed back to september by Interscope but 50 Cent will still enjoy a hot summer because one of his investments just paid off really nice.
Coca Cola just bought Vitamin Water maker Glaceau for $4.1 billion. And guess what ? Your favorite rapper bought a 10% share of the company for around 10 million back in 2004 as part of his contract for his branded water called Formula 50. That means that Fifty banks in around $400m from his investment in Glacéau.
The company will operate as separate business unit within Coca-Cola North America (CCNA), allowing the company to continue to grow and marketplace, while taking advantage of Coca-Cola’s marketing, management and distribution resources globally.
"It’s a perfect match connecting the hottest active lifestyle brand with the full resources of the world’s best beverage company," said J. Darius Bikoff, Glacéau founder and chief executive officer. "To best understand today’s announcement, you really need to go out, buy a bottle of vitaminwater and try it for yourself to see how well it works."
The transaction is expected to close in 2007 and is subject to customary regulatory review.
50 Cent is currently showing off his classical skills in a new TV advertisement for the energy drink, when he brings in DJ Whoo Kid and conducts a symphony orchestra through a rendition of his breakthrough hit, "In Da Club."
Update on 30/05 :
In an exclusive interview, MediaTakeOut.com spoke with an investment banker familiar with the proposed Energy Brands acquisition. And according to the banker, 50’s equity interest in the beverage company is far less than 10%. The banker explains, "50 Cent has a licensing agreement with Energy Brands which pays him a set fee and gives him a percentage of the sales from Formula 50 [The flavor specifically designed by 50]. He does not own a significant interest in the company ... The 10% number you hear is pure fiction."
But don’t feel too sorry for the multi-platinum selling rapper. According to the banker, 50 Cent’s current deal with Energy Brands is worth many millions of dollars. Tells the Wall St. whiz, "[Energy Brands] has a number of celebrities who endorse their products, including Brain Urlacher, Shaquille O’Neill, and Allen Iverson. But the endorsement deal with 50 Cent is, by far, the most substantial."
