50 Cent dominate 2005 Billboard awards

Rapper 50 Cent and veteran modern rock act Green Day were the toast of Las Vegas last night (Dec. 6), as each nabbed six trophies at the 2005 Billboard Music Awards.

50 had led the pack of nominees with eight mentions, and took home trophies for Artist of the Year, Album of the Year (The Massacre), R&B/Hip Hop Artist, Rap Artist, Hot 100 Artist, and Ringtone of the Year ("Candy Shop") at the ceremony broadcast live from Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena. LL Cool J, who hosted the show, called 50 Cent - who was in Paris and couldn’t make it to the show - to let him know which awards he had won.

Modesty was lost on Kanye West as he came up to accept his Artist Achievement Award. "When I first came out I was a hot head," he said. "I thought I was the greatest. I still think I’m the greatest." Mariah Carey, who was nominated in seven categories, won five awards, while "American Idol" Carrie Underwood and Shakira each took home three.

No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani won the new artiste of the year award for her solo debut, "Love.Angel.Music.Baby". Gwen Stefani was also honored with Digital Song of the Year for "Hollaback Girl," and asked collaborator Pharrell to come up on stage and accept the award with her.
Daddy Yankee, who also performed at the show, won two awards including Latin Album of the Year for Barrio Fino, while Mario similarly took home a pair of trophies, including one for R&B/Hip Hop song of the Year for "Let Me Love You."
