50 Cent
Album: 50 Cent The New Breed
Release Date: April 22, 2003
Label: Interscope Records
Review:
Through years of hustling tapes while battling, attracting bullets, blades, and murder accusations, 50 Cent earned the overnight success that came his way in the early months of 2003. On the heels of the multi-platinum GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN’, 50 strikes while the iron is hot with THE NEW BREED. This two-disc package is not an album per se, but features a filled-to-the-gills DVD, containing a lengthy interview, a documentary, four videos, concert footage, live sessions, commentary, pretty much everything one might want to know about the gangsta rapper-turned-household-name.
The three new songs on the other CD would almost seem an afterthought to the
flashy stuff on the DVD side, but in fact they are three of the rapper’s sharpest,
hardest tracks. While his beats are undeniable (and produced by many of the
best in the game), 50 lives and dies by his lyrics balancing ultra-violence
with honor and intelligence. See "8 Mile Road," a sort of reworking
of an Eminem composition, produced by Mr. Mathers himself, or the mission statement
of "True Loyalty" ("I got so many meats and so many leathers,
my crib is surrounded by animal protesters").
Producers: Red Spyda, Eminem, Dr, Dre.
